Halloween costumes and a new gameplay mode appear to be coming
Our first look at Overwatch’s next character may be here a little earlier than Blizzard planned — that is, if the supposed leak of the hacker known as Sombra isn’t part of the developer’s ongoing alternate reality game.
An image posted to Imgur, Gyazo, DeviantArt and elsewhere claims to show Sombra, "one of the world’s best and most notorious hackers," in the flesh. The image appears to have been leaked from an internal website at Blizzard and says that Sombra "will be hacking her way into the build later tonight," though it’s not clear when the photo was taken.
The image appears to come with a partial description of Sombra. According to her rumored bio, she worked with the Mexican Los Muertos gang — seen in Soldier: 76’s animated short — "until she attracted too much unwanted attention and had to go underground." She was later recruited by the Talon organization, the same group that Overwatch characters Reaper and Widowmaker work for.
She appears to be armed with a submachine gun and wearing special gloves. Here’s a clearer look:
The Sombra leak may also offer details on a new gameplay mode coming to Overwatch. That mode will supposedly see players protecting a castle from "Zomnics and Dr. Junkenstein’s evil allies" and come with three levels of difficulty.
Dr. Junkenstein likely refers to leaked images of a Dr. Frankenstein-inspired version of Junkrat, which players dug out from game data and what appears to be a leaked issue of the Overwatch comic book.
The comic appears to show Halloween costumes for a number of Overwatch characters, including Mercy as a witch, Reaper as a jack-o’-lantern-wearing wraith, Junkrat as a mad scientist and Roadhog as his Frankenstein’s monster-esque creation.
That horror-themed event may also tie into another possible leak from earlier this week. Some Xbox One owners reported seeing "Halloween loot boxes" on the Xbox Store, hinting at new skins, emotes and other cosmetics coming to Overwatch.
In a developer update video posted earlier this week, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan said his team was "actively working on more heroes" for the game. One of those heroes is "very far along" and "coming together really well," he said, and "will see the light of day sooner rather than later."
